As Pittsburgh Penguins icons, Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby have experienced many significant events and moments together over the past 20 years.
On Wednesday night against the Buffalo Sabres, they both celebrated significant moments as Crosby became the 10th player in NHL history to reach 1,600 regular-season points in a career and Malkin became the 48th player to reach 500 career goals.

Crosby’s goal in overtime sealed a 6-5 triumph over Buffalo.
Malkin remarked, “I really wanted to score (the 500th goal) last year.” I guess I was thinking about it too much during the summer. It took a while to reach 500, but I’m happy to have done it at last.
Malkin assisted Crosby in 2022 when he scored his 500th NHL goal. On Wednesday, Crosby gave it back at 3:26 in the third period.
Malkin was sitting on the ice when Crosby lifted the puck past Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen with a between-the-legs pass from behind the net in front of him. The audience gave Malkin a standing ovation, and the entire bench emptied to congratulate him.
Crosby remarked, “It was a pretty awesome goal.” I was there in the front row when he did that. I will remember that one very well.
Malkin is the 20th player in NHL history to reach 500 goals with a single franchise, and he has the third-most goals in Penguins history with 500 in 1,150 games. The 38-year-old Malkin was chosen by the Penguins with the second overall pick in the 2004 Draft, and he and Crosby have helped Pittsburgh win three Stanley Cup titles together.
According to Penguins coach Mike Sullivan, “the Penguins’ fingerprints are all over the championships they have won while they have been here.” “Stanley Cup victories have a way of igniting relationships.”
Malkin became the only active player with 500 goals, joining Crosby (592), Alex Ovechkin (853) of Washington, and Steven Stamkos (555) of Nashville. It was accomplished by Stamkos with Tampa Bay. Malkin and Ovechkin are the only players in NHL history to be born in Russia.
With three 500-goal scorers, Pittsburgh is the second-highest scoring club in NHL history, after Montreal.
Against Buffalo, the Penguins’ best players combined for a seven-point performance. Crosby had two assists and one goal. Malkin has 11 points in five games, including a goal and three assists, and he doesn’t appear to be slowing down.
Sullivan remarked, “I think Malkin has had a really strong start to the season.” “The puck seems to follow him around when he’s playing at his best, and that’s what he’s doing right now.”
At 11:01 of the first period, Crosby provided the secondary assist on Bryan Rust’s power-play goal, earning him his 1,600th point of the regular season. Since Jaromir Jagr on October 6, 2011, the 37-year-old Crosby is the first player to accomplish the feat.
Crosby was the fifth-fewest player to reach 1,600 points, requiring 1,277 games. Crosby is seven goals away from scoring 600 goals in his 20th NHL season. He is 39 points away from sharing ninth place in NHL history with Hall of Famer Joe Sakic.
Currently ranked 121 points behind Hall of Famer and Penguins great Mario Lemieux for ninth place in league history, Crosby was chosen by Pittsburgh with the first overall pick in the 2005 Draft. Lemieux also holds the team record with 1,723 points.
Malkin and Crosby were in the spotlight for another night.
Malkin remarked, “I think we deserved to spend this evening together.” “The story is fantastic.”
