In the first ALCS game, the New York Yankees dominate the ferocious Cleveland Guardians.

In Game 1 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS), the New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians 5-2 on Monday night. Juan Soto hit his first home run of the postseason, and Carlos Rodón recovered with nine strikeouts in six solid innings.

In front of 47,264 spectators at Yankee Stadium, Soto opened a three-run rally for New York in the bottom of the third inning with a solo blast off Guardians starter Alex Cobb.

Cobb, who was making his first postseason start since 2013, got two outs after the blast but was removed from the game after walking Yankees sluggers Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Anthony Volpe.

The rookie reliever Joey Cantillo struggled with his command, so Guardians manager Stephen Vogt turned to him when the bases were loaded and he had two outs. To give the Yankees a 3-0 lead, Cantillo threw an AL postseason record four wild pitches, two of which allowed runs to score.

Regarding the team’s crucial third inning, Soto remarked, “That’s what good teams do.” “It’s about the entire lineup, not just one guy, and we demonstrated that by applying pressure to those guys.”

Rodón’s dominating performance on the mound helped him win his first postseason game after a difficult AL Division Series outing.

Rodón had a strong start in Game 2 of the ALDS series against the Kansas City Royals earlier in the postseason, but he faltered in the fourth inning, giving up four runs before being pulled.

Regarding controlling his emotions, Rodón stated on Monday, “I had it under control most of the night.” “I mentally made notes about how Gerrit (Cole) was going out there and going about it after watching him throw that Game 4 in Kansas City a few days ago. I just wanted to kind of approach it the same way, and I felt like I did well with that tonight.”

By hitting a solo shot to left field in the seventh inning, Stanton increased New York’s advantage to 5-1.

In the top of the eighth, Cleveland blasted three straight singles off Yankees reliever Tim Hill, threatening to end the game. Cleveland would only go as near as that after Steven Kwan, an outfielder for the Guardians, grounded a ball to left field to trim the score to 5-2.

Aaron Boone, the manager of the Yankees, used closer Luke Weaver for the final five outs with the tying run at the plate. The threat was eliminated when Weaver got Guardians star third baseman José Ramírez to ground out after striking out pinch hitter Will Brennan.

Weaver secured the Yankees victory and his fourth save of the postseason by striking out the next three batters after giving up a walk in the top of the ninth inning.

The series’ second game is scheduled on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees will use top pitcher Gerrit Cole to try to tie the series, while Cleveland will send ace Tanner Bibee to the mound.

Teams who win Game 1 have historically won the series 23 times out of 38 (approximately 60.5%), including 10 of the last 13 (almost 77%), since the ALCS switched to a best-of-seven format.
